Flags of Europe - Austria
Various countries in Europe fly tricolor type flags, include Austria. Like other flags of Europe, the Austrian flag displays three horizontal bands, colored red, white (being the center band) and red. Interestingly, this particular banner is the 2nd oldest flag in use in our day, the national flag of Denmark being the oldest one.
Adopted back in 1230, more than 750 years ago, Austrian flags fly proudly from flag poles throughout this stunning country. At the time, Duke Friedrich 2, who was also nicknamed the Warlike, produced a new a design for the coat of arms in the colors red, white and red, also in the year 1230. This effort was part of an attempt to become more independent from the mighty Roman Empire at that time.
Austria is considered a landlocked country, counting more than eight million inhabitants today. Referred to as "Osterreich" in the German language, this country is located in the Central European area and borders Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland. This territory is commonly known for its mountainous terrain, which includes the area of the Alps.
Like other flags of Europe, the Austrian flag also has its respective legend(s). For example, and yes according to legend, Duke Leopold 5 of Austria, who lived some 37 years, first invented the national banner. The design was made as result of his battle during the well-known Crusades. After a battle, his white dress was drenched in blood. After removing his belt, the material underneath was mostly untouched, thus revealing tricolor pattern. This event was the inspiration for the flag's design.
